Guitar Center is pleased to announce the return of Guitar Center’s Drum-Off, the world’s largest drum competition. Starting August 1st, drummers can sign up for their chance to win over $40,000 in cash and prizes, joining over 5,000 drummers from across the country to compete for the title of Guitar Center’s Drum-Off Champion.

Now in its 21st year, Guitar Center’s Drum-Off has been a launching pad for numerous professional drummers, including Cora “CC” Dunham (Prince), Eric Moore II (Suicidal Tendencies), Tony Royster Jr. (Jay Z) and Thomas Pridgen (The Mars Volta). Last year’s Drum-Off Champion, 22-year-old Jerome Flood II, made his television debut when he was invited to perform on Last Call with Carson Daly following his dramatic win (see Flood’s winning performance here).

Guitar Center’s Drum-Off ‘09 champion will win an impressive package of prizes, including $25,000 cash, a Roland TD-25 electronic kit, a custom designed drum kit by DW, Pearl, Gretsch, Tama, or Orange Country Drums, a drum, stick, cymbal, and drum head endorsement deals as well as a feature in Modern Drummer magazine, along with a VIP appearance @ NAMM 2010 and a Monster Energy Drink endorsement deal, making the total prize package worth over $40,000. Sha Na Na, Na Na Na Na Na

Sha Na Na’s 40th Anniversary Collector’s Edition CD release party was a jumpin’ good time! The event was held at the Barnes and Noble, Glendale CA on July 16th.  The room was full of adoring fans both young and old. Some of us have followed their storied career from the beginning.   I was one of the fortunate ones that saw them at Woodstock in 1969, forty years ago next month. They went on just before the last act: Jimi Hendrix.
KLOS veteran D.J.Bob Burns introduced the band and the guys took the stage for a rousing set of Rock and Roll classics along with songs from the 40th Anniversary CD.  Their ability to interact with a crowd is legendary, and many of us were dragged on stage to do the Twist and the Hand Jive!
The best dressed greaser at the event was awarded a white Fender Stratocaster donated by the Guitar Center promotions team.  Voted on by audience response, Little Andrew Bingham from Burbank took the stage and was presented with the guitar by original Sha Na Na member Jocko Marcellino and me.

The band arguably has one of the most amazing resumes in rock and roll. In addition to Woodstock, they performed regularly at the Fillmore East, had their own TV variety show, and were featured in the movie “Grease”. Most of them got degrees from Columbia University too. Sha Na Na has made vintage rock ‘n roll their own, and they still perform red hot for hep cats and hippies alike.  Proof that Rock and Roll is here to stay.

Guitar Center Radio

How great of an opportunity would it be for your band to have a song play in all 214 Guitar Center stores natiowide? For 5 Guitar Center employees, this dream becomes a reality each and every month. Each of the songs below will play in every store with an introduction including the band and song name.  These artists have earned this opportunity by receiving positive ratings from their peers and coworkers in the GAIN Community.

I’m proud to announce the GAIN songs that will be playing on GC Radio for the month of July:

Hey Hello – “Sharper Knives Harder Drives” – Steffen Wade – Davenport, IA
Double Plow – “River Woman” – Jimmy Norris – Albuquerque, NM
Double Plow – “Election Day” – Matt Remenar – Albuquerque, NM
City in Panic – “So Much Cooler Than New York” – Cory Haskel – Hallandale , FL
Chips ‘n’ Dip – “Greedy Beach” – Stefanie Whitney – Salt Lake City, UT

GAIN is a program launched in March of 2007 with the goal of helping Guitar Center employees further their dreams and aspirations in the music business. At the heart of the GAIN Program is an online community where members can take advantage of special deals, offers, contests and opportunities. The songs uploaded by employees on GAIN can be rated up to 5 stars by other members. These ratings add up and as people rate, songs climb the GAIN Top Tracks Charts. The top five songs from the charts every month get played in every Guitar Center nationwide on GC Radio.
