Les Paul

“Heads and it’s back to New York. Tails and we go to L.A.” Les grinned, peering at me over the smudged

lenses of his metal-rimmed glasses. I couldn’t tell if he was pulling my leg or if he was serious but I didn’t really care. I had asked him to tell me about his early days of playing guitar. He launched into this wonderful, lyrical story about playing his way from New York to Chicago, then getting a call from Bing Crosby, who wanted him to come to Los Angeles and record with him. He had no recording experience and was more than a little nervous about it, he explained. Torn whether to head west or go back to New York, out came the coin. He grabbed the tumbling coin in mid-air and flipped it over onto the opposite wrist. Tails. And the rest, as they say, is history.

He was well into his 90s when we first met, yet this slight man with the razor wit and ribald sense of humor was as spry and lively as one could ever hope to be. At any age. Comfortably dressed in all black, he seemed 20 years younger to me, completely relaxed, sitting in the “green room” of the Iridium Club in Manhattan, where he had mesmerized audiences nearly every Monday night since 1996 with his fluid riffs and saucy quips.

The guitar in his hands seemed increasingly to be one of his own extremities rather than an instrument. He knew it at the molecular level, of course. He had, after all, designed this iconic instrument half a century earlier; an instrument that still bears his name as well as the famous Gibson brand.

That night at the Iridium, Les met with Gibson’s Tom Gordon, Guitar Center’s Michael Doyle and me to discuss an idea for a guitar promotion I wanted to do. As enthusiastic as he was gracious, Les was fully supportive of the idea and even agreed to do a photo shoot with a Santa hat for a promotional calendar. There was no hint of pretense, no rock star attitude; he was a “regular guy” who just so happened to be a genius.

His invention of multi-track recording and his contribution to the guitar, both as a player and as a visionary, are immeasurable. His legacy will live on in the millions of instruments that bear his name, in the music he brought us all and in every recording your iPod can hold.

Thank you, Les. Rest in peace.

Wanna Share a Cab?

It’s that song that’s been stuck in your head. That one that you remember exactly what you were doing the first time you heard it. The person you were dancing with or kissing as the rain pounded the roof of the car. What I’m saying is that it’s often Setting vs. Sound when it comes to memorable songs, but now that music is so accessible, musicians have thousands of followers and sell out huge stadiums. To me, it seems that intimacy of music is fleeting.

It’s only when something like The Black Cab Sessions comes around that we truly realize the musicianship and talent that is out there. Black Cab Sessions invite popular artists of a variety of genres to play a song inside their taxi cab. Yes, musicians, their instruments, and recordists cram into a cab for a single-song performance as they trolley through London.

They’re updated regularly and there are currently 79 episodes. Check them out HERE. You’ll feel like you’re the only one on Earth that had the privilege of being there.

One Song. One Take. One Cab.

Guitar Center Radio, August

How great of an opportunity would it be for your band to have a song play in all 214 Guitar Center stores natiowide? For 5 Guitar Center employees, this dream becomes a reality each and every month. Each of the songs below will play in every store with an introduction including the band and song name.  These artists have earned this opportunity by receiving positive ratings from their peers and coworkers in the GAIN Community.

I’m proud to announce the GAIN songs playing on GC Radio for the month of August:

“Double Speak” by Exesion – David Ford, GC Evansville, IN
“Be Gone With You” by Aroarah – Chelsea Baker, GC Sacramento, CA
“Marbles” by Double Plow – Jimmy James, GC Albuquerque, NM
“Fingertight Alibi” by FareTheeWell – Wasley Schultz, GC Chattanooga, TN
“I Fear No More” by Dreams Unseen – Shig, GC Fountain Valley, CA

GAIN is a program launched in March of 2007 with the goal of helping Guitar Center employees further their dreams and aspirations in the music business. At the heart of the GAIN Program is an online community where members can take advantage of special deals, offers, contests and opportunities. The songs uploaded by employees on GAIN can be rated up to 5 stars by other members. These ratings add up and as people rate, songs climb the GAIN Top Tracks Charts. The top five songs from the charts every month get played in every Guitar Center nationwide on GC Radio.

Sheila E

On June 25th, We held another GC Sessions percussion event with the legendary Sheila E. The evening turned out to be a very special event as Sheila played with Michael Jackson and the announcement of his passing hit everyone at the store during sound check. Even with the news, over 150 people showed up for the event, lining up hours before it actually started.

The crowd patiently awaiting for Sheila E!

Once again I played master of ceremonies and Sheila went through a number of demonstrations of all the different types of percussion she is famous for, including her new line of signature congas and bongos.

After a great solo on the drum set, Sheila got involved in a Q and A with the crowd and even brought a few surprised individuals up to play along with her!

The crowd is captivated!

The evening ended with GC giving away over $2000 worth of prizes from the sponsoring companies of DW, Zildjian, Shure, Remo and Toca. A great time was had by all and will remain in everyone’s memory banks as a very special evening.

The Hit Man

What do The Smashing Pumpkins, Bob Seger, Elton John, Bob Dylan, Ray Charles, B.B. King, Gladys Knight, Avril Lavinge, Carlos Santana, The Rolling Stones, John Cougar Mellencamp and a list of another 50 artists too long to mention have in common? One man… or should I say drummer – Kenny Aronoff.

This month at Guitar Center we’re proud to feature drum icon Kenny on the cover and within the pages of the drum edition of our 45th Anniversary buyer’s guide. I recently had the honor of sitting down with Kenny to talk drums, touring, Drum-Off, gigs, training under Vic Firth, approaching music as a business and everything in between.

Join us for a phenomenal chat with one of the drum world’s most accomplished figures.
