Public Enemies: Chuck D and Johnny Juice

To say that hip-hop legends Public Enemy were game changers is underselling one of the genre’s most important and defining acts. That’s because the Long Island-based act wasn’t merely changing the rules of hip-hop, they were writing the rules. Establishing a political and social consciousness as a common thread throughout their tracks. Merging traditional rap styles with hard rock bands— and in turn offering rap-metal to the masses. Infusing musical details from sources that were otherwise untapped. Public Enemy, fronted by the highly visible Chuck D and Flavor Flav, has consistently forged new avenues in otherwise untapped territory.

This month at Guitar Center we’re honored to feature hip-hop pioneers Chuck D and Johnny Juice of Public Enemy on the cover and within the pages of our September Hi-Tech Guide.  Join us as we converse with a master.

The Chosen: Tony Royster & Cora CC Dunham

Each year, thousands of drummers across the nation line up to enter the world’s largest drumming contest, Guitar Center’s Drum-Off, hopeful for the opportunity to rise through the various stages of the competition and eventually be crowned as the top undiscovered drummer in the nation. While many may call receiving such an award a success story all to itself, a number of Guitar Center Drum-Off winners have gone on to attain significant acclaim in the drumming scene.

Cora Coleman-Dunham and Tony Royster Jr. are two young Drum-Off winners who have since taken their well-earned status to the next level. At the age of eleven, Royster was the youngest drummer to clinch the title, beating out drummers decades his senior with his unparalleled handiwork. In 2002, Dunham was the first female to be honored with the same prize, shattering the “boy’s club” drumming mold. Both have since racked up impressive credentials, playing behind a bevy of popular artists, including Jay-Z, Prince, Pink and more. Still in their twenties, these are the next—if not current generation of drumming greats. And, as we’ve learned after recently catching up with them, they’ll be the first to tell you that their participation in Guitar Center’s Drum-Off competition was a key element in the launching of their remarkable careers.

Join us for a drum-side chat with two of the hottest young drummers on the scene as we feature Tony Royster Jr. and Cora Cora-Dunham on the cover and within the pages of our September Drum Guide.

Tom Delonge: At Guitar Center

Frontman, guitarist, producer, songwriter, businessman these are some of the many hats that musician Tom DeLonge has worn throughout his dozen-plus years in the music scene, whether as the on-stage co-lead to bassist Mark Hoppus in platinum pop-punk powerhouse Blink-182 or as the sole frontman of the more experimental, alternative rock act Angels and Airwaves. Or perhaps its as the head of Macbeth Shoes or the visionary behind the social networking website Modlife.

No matter which angle he’s viewed from, DeLonge’s years in both the underground and mainstream circuits have found him delivering interesting and important perspectives on the ever-changing entertainment industry, specifically in terms of tastes, technologies and traditions.

This month at Guitar Center we sat down with Tom just a few days before he left for Blink 182′s North American reunion tour.  The agenda – Everything from how artists can best navigate the uncharted waters of new music business, his addiction to gear, his new approach to making music, why you should give your music away for free and the reason he hasn’t had a decent night of sleep in years.
